The University of North Dakota‘s Student Wellness Center was recently ranked as the 30th most luxurious college recreation center in the nation, according to collegerank.net.
The website highlights the following, “there is a plethora of fitness and activity based events. Starting with the nearly ubiquitous rock wall, prospective climbers can improve their skills through concentrated belay training and improve their balance through slacklining. In fact, the university even offers “Cosmic Climbing” which is complete with black lights and glow-in-the-dark holds. Every year the trails behind the Wellness Center transform into the perfect environment for cross country skiing. Another annual event is the Green Gallop Homecoming Run, a 10k race that winds along the English Coulee through campus and past the Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Health and Wellness Center also offers fast and healthy cooking options at the culinary corner, and even provides a demonstration area for those students who wish to improve their food preparation skills.”
The University of North Dakota responds to the exciting news with the following, “The word ‘luxurious’ … implies that the value of facilities like this is an amenity rather than an important contributor to the student experience both inside and outside the classroom,” UND Wellness Center director Jennifer Puhl Winker said. “That said, the recognition of our facility and programs on the national scale is much appreciated. It is always an honor to be profiled alongside such landmark facilities and programs. Since the building is quickly approaching its 10-year anniversary, to continue to be acknowledged as one of the best speaks volumes to the vision and commitment of the students and administrators that made it happen.”
The UND Student Wellness Center is 107,964 square feet and was a total of $17.96 million. Obermiller Nelson Engineering worked on the project both mechanically and electrically. The architect was Hastings and Chivetta Architects and the associate architect was ICON Architects. “The wellness center has expanded the opportunities for students, faculty and staff to develop the foundation of a healthy lifestyle through leisure, fitness, and social activities. through a well-considered planning process, the facility has come to represent a holistic approach to wellness.” The Student Center opened in 2006.
