West Fargo Sports Arena
West Fargo, North Dakota
The West Fargo Sports Arena includes two sheets of ice, a lobby (main and upper level), an office, nine locker rooms, meeting space, a concession stand, a Zamboni room, and an ice equipment room. Obernel partnered with JLG Architects on this project and was the mechanical and electrical engineer, including lighting design.
The mechanical design included two desiccant dehumidification units that provide ventilation to the two sheets of ice. Each unit is gas-fired heat with DX cooling. There are separate DX air-cooled condensing units for each dehumidification unit.
Three single-zone gas-fired rooftop energy-recovery units with packaged DX cooling serve the locker rooms.
A standard packaged air-handling unit with X cooling and gas-fired heat serves the lobby, concessions stand, and office.
Gas-fired unit heaters provide heat for ice mechanical room and Zamboni room.
Obernel designed for fire protection sprinklers throughout the entire building. There are two zones with a third zone capped for future.
There are four water heaters: two serving the building hot water and two serving the Zamboni fill.
The electrical design included video surveillance cameras, a hardwired intrusion detection system, a card access system to match WFPS existing system, LED lighting throughout the building with occupancy sensors in the bathrooms and storage rooms, and site lighting and building facade lighting.
