Sanford Health Athletic Complex (The SHAC)
Fargo, North Dakota
Obernel partnered with TL Stroh Architects & Interiors and North Dakota State University to develop the design for the Sanford Health Athletic Complex (The SHAC). The newly renovated building brings a close to the ten-plus year project and gives Bison Athletics a new home. Obernel was responsible for the mechanical engineering on this project including fire protection.
Not only does the SHAC give NDSU athletes a true Division 1 competition arena, but it also includes a weight room, turf for conditioning, a fueling station, a new wrestling training facility, practice courts, locker rooms, offices, and conference rooms. Brent Wavra, Managing Principal and Mechanical Engineer at Obernel commented that “It’s great to see NDSU get what they deserve in a facility like this. This facility was a much-needed enhancement to the university system, and I think it’s going to be an attraction to get students to watch basketball games. People will want to be in there to watch these games. Just the whole feel of it is really cool.”
Wavra, an NDSU graduate like many of our Obernel team members, added that it was satisfying to work on a big project like this for his alma mater. “It is so much fun to walk on campus and put yourself back there. I remember going to the BSA and playing pickup basketball games in that area. And now it’s like holy cow, I am working on this! If my kids get to play in that arena, it would be completely different from where I played and getting to be a part of that transformation is pretty special.”
