Grafton Middle School
Grafton, North Dakota
Obernel partnered with ICON Architectural Group to provide mechanical and electrical engineering on this project which consisted of relocating and adding Grafton Middle School for Grafton Public Schools. The school system previously had the elementary and high school buildings in one location while the middle school was downtown. This project brought all schools to one site and updated the entire heating system. While the addition was mostly classroom space, it did include adding a gymnasium and an auditorium/theater.
For energy efficiency, Obernel designed for off-peak gas, variable air volume system to minimize airflow, carbon dioxide sensors so that when the rooms aren’t occupied, the HVAC systems won’t bring in excess fresh air. It also had a full digital controls system that they can manage both on-site and remotely.
The Grafton Middle School project was challenging in that it required adding on to the south side of an existing building which while operational. Five different school districts share the vocational-technical program in the high school. Even with these significant service interruptions, Obernel had to make sure the school and vo-tech programs stayed in operation. The team was successful, and the project went well.
